Remnant: From the Ashes is not an easy character game, and at first glance it may seem too gray and sterile, but it is not so. A boring start may spoil the impression, but immediately after the prologue the game opens up like a beautiful bird. An excellent combat system that constantly changes its pace and is built on the idea of combining Dark Souls with a strong emphasis on gun battles. Surprisingly simple and at the same time not at all seeming lazy, random generation of levels and some items, fascinating progression and very diverse worlds, each with its own set of unique opponents. In the company of three heroes or alone, you make your way through hordes of enemies and destroy huge boss monsters, quite unique in their design and combat qualities. We move along the plot, improve our characteristics, and find extremely rare loot. At the same time, it’s also pleasant to do this because developers from Gunfire Games managed to create worlds that feel extraordinary and are full of details that are fun to find and discover.
And in general, Remnant: From the Ashes can give you real video game addiction. True, at the beginning of the adventure it’s hard to believe this – the prologue and the first locations of the game are not very inspiring. Remnant meets you with a tired and seemingly forced plot about the last opportunity to save the world, faded landscapes of a gray post-apocalypse, boring characters and very simple action. But don’t let yourself fall asleep or delete the game, because after the first hour, when the game really lets you frolic with the monsters in its wondrous world, its transformation will be amazing.
To begin with, it is worth noting that the game looks very nice, and in some places even beautiful, while everything is in order with optimization. The design of enemies and locations is interesting and, surprisingly, doesn’t get boring even after I’ve played for 25 hours. Each level is built like a labyrinth, inside they can be divided into dungeons and locations on the surface. In some places they are cramped, in others they are very spacious, and each level has a unique grotesque beauty, and the worlds are beautiful and cruel at the same time. Except that the very first world can quickly become boring, but this is not surprising, because we start the game in an alternative version of the earth of the future and fight with mutant snags.
An intriguingly written and interesting Lore (if anyone needs it in such a game at all) is also available here, however, to get to it, and at least roughly understand what happened in this world, you will need to re-read many notes and electronic files that rest in a separate location. Nobody takes you there or forces you to get into them – if you want to read and get to know better the plot of the game about experiments with crystals leading to other worlds, then please, but this is a completely optional program.

And there are impressively few types of equipment here, although, for such a genre orientation, you expect to see some semblance diablo loot.
But you know, even these quibbles don’t cloud the picture, because high difficulty forces you to approach battles wisely and use all your available abilities and skills, to be more dexterous and careful. And the system of crafting and finding items and new weapons is very clearly reminiscent of BloodBourne or other souls games. Moreover, in Remnant there is a clear emphasis on pumping and improvements, and not on constantly replacing one item with another.
But Gunfire Games still haven’t forgotten about such a thing as looting on the field of a recently held battle – after all, local currency, hardware for upgrades and ammunition are so needed. This is especially true of the latter – the in-game balance is built in such a way that it forces you to always care about the number of cartridges, change weapons on the go and kill enemies not only with firearms, but also with melee weapons. It is unlikely that you will be able to completely focus on one thing, but even some perks in the leveling tree hint that you can focus on something more suitable for your fighting style.
Oh, and the fights here can be so juicy, intense and addictive. The combat system can only be described with words like great, fantastic, awesome, etc. You get pleasure from everything, and every blow, dodge or shot feels pleasantly hard. Each gun or stick with a sword has its own characteristics that are noticeably different from each other, affecting the character’s movements in battle.
One enemy rarely becomes a threat, but that’s why we usually deal with groups of different monsters. We shoot from a long-range rifle at the skull of an enemy in the distance, then pour burning lead from a machine gun on weaker enemies running at you, roll sharply from their blows, after all, blocks are for weaklings, and immediately apply them with a hammer or scythe, tearing them into pieces, and on the brute who has been moving in your direction all this time, we use a super-blow that is screwed to one of the guns. At the same time, we never forget to monitor our health and stamina indicators, just like in BloodBourne or Dark Souls. Finding the right rhythm in combat is an important part of success.
And after passing several checkpoints, sooner or later we encounter bosses, battles with which only at first seem simple and uncomplicated, but by the middle of the game you will be faced with challenges to your dexterity, reaction speed and thinking. Although leveling up with the right equipment can play an important role. Even the entrance to the boss level occurs through a foggy veil – it looks exactly like in Dark Souls. By the way, there are a lot of boss fights here, and this, in my opinion, is another indisputable advantage of the game.
As stated above, in Remnant: From the Ashes procedural generation of levels is used, although this will only be truly noticeable when replaying the game, and most importantly, the locations rarely seem like repeating scraps or identical corridors. Although it is not necessary to go through the game again, because it is possible to join the passage of other players and your friends, helping them in co-op. It works inconsistently at times and is clearly not developed to modern standards, but, oddly enough, simply having it is already enough to enjoy playing together.
Remnant: From the Ashes, certainly not a perfect game, and perhaps even far from a masterpiece. But all its shortcomings, rough edges, poorly developed loot system, weak soundtrack and many other disadvantages, which were the result of a clearly small budget, do not negate the fact that it is fun to play, looks and sounds great and is capable of captivating for a long time. At the moment, this is definitely the best co-op game this year. And one of the most cheerful and enjoyable action films of recent years.
Gunfire Games – are no longer beginners and can boast of developed high-class games. They have games in the series behind them DarkSiders, different and varied in their gameplay and style. And now they have made another one, very different from previous projects, Remnant: From the Ashes. This time it is a completely unique mixture of different genres and concepts, reminiscent at the same time BloodBourne, Hellgate London, Resident Evil, Warframe… And you know, the resulting hodgepodge, unlike many similar experimental predecessors, turned out to be really very tasty and pleasant, both externally and internally.
And that’s why I’m very sorry for Gunfire Games and them Remnant, after all, nothing really is seen or heard about the game anywhere – it has the poorest advertising campaign, no sundress, and, accordingly, very low sales in the first 2 weeks. Although, as in the case of the same Darksiders 2, gamers and ordinary gamers who evaluate the game note that Remnant, despite minor shortcomings and mistakes, they really like it.
Low sales and meager online, I’m afraid they’ll drown Remnant: From the Ashes, and I will be left without updates and support from the developers of the game I already love so much. But I hope it doesn’t sink the studio Gunfire Games, and they will still be able to find the strength and means to create new, although not masterpieces, but truly good and exciting games.
